What do you think when you hear about discrimination? There are many kinds of discrimination all over the world, for example, sex discrimination, reverse discrimination and segregation. When I was a junior high school student, I learned about segregation and Martin Luther King, and I got the information of real segregation for the first time. Since then, I wanted to know about segregation. And I will tell you about that below.
White people had worked black people as slaves at many trades with foreign countries since 17th the century. After that, the way white people worked black people became worse, for instance, blacks were forced to work hard at plantation of cotton from morning till night. And black people were chained, did not eat enough and hungered in the USA and Europe. Therefore, the blacks could not have the rights and marry the whites. Although some presidents opposed discrimination, the institution about slavery was not abolished. But in 1963, Martin Luther King appealed for the abolition of segregation and boycotted against injustice in the USA. Then, he made the famous address. He said, “I have a dream. One day my four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin. One day the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” In those days, there were many things which black people could not do. For example, they couldn’t use the same toilets, enter the same restaurants and take the bus seats. ‘White only’ was the law. But finally they could have civil rights thanks to his efforts.
How about the current relation between blacks and whites? These days, black people can use the toilets, enter the restaurants and take the bus seats without hesitation. Moreover, black people can vote and marry white people. Also black actors costar with white actors when we watch TV and movies, and black children and white children go to the same school today. I thought it seemed a wonder that blacks and whites live in the same society when I heard the speech Mr. King addressed. Thus, it seems that they have no problem about race. But discrimination maybe remains in a part of the world. I think people who are discriminated cannot enjoy themselves. Accordingly, we should abolish discrimination as many as possible.
