Why did you decide to study English? Why do you like English or foreign countries?
When I was a child, I went to an English school for children. My younger sister had been there before I went. This school was not for study. We just sang English songs and played some dramas in English. However, I didn’t like to go there. I didn’t like to memorize my lines of the drama and I didn’t feel it was fun. Moreover, I had to go to America if I continued until I was a junior high school student. I didn’t want to go to America then. Therefore, I left that school and I still didn’t like English when I entered junior high school. I had been thinking “Why must I study English? I’m a Japanese!” I never thought then I would like English.
But when I was in second grade of junior high school, I began to listen to English music. A friend of mine listened to English music, so I was interested in it too. I also got interested in English by music. I have been listening to lots of English music. It is a powerful incentive for me to study English and I began to be interested in foreign countries because I wanted to know about the places where my favourite singers grew up. I also like western films. My father likes them, so I used to see films from I was a little child.
The film and music make me study English. If I was not interested in them, I don’t think would have come to like English and be interested in foreign countries now. They broaden my horizons. I would like to understand the lyrics without Japanese lyrics. I would like to understand the lines without subtitles. I have those aims, so I decided to try to study English more at university. I’d like also to meet various foreign people. It is very interesting to meet new people and my life experience will be large. Therefore, I study and like English. English changes my life.
